Why not water the rocks? (#23)

People asked the same question in replies (“Why don’t water rocks?”). The short version of his concern:

  • Pouring water on hot stones creates a burst of steam that can aerosolize whatever is on/in the rocks and heater — mineral scale, stone dust/particulates, residue from the heating elements, and anything in impure water.
  • That steam is what you then breathe deep and hard in a small wooden box. The point of “dry sauna best + no löyly” in this protocol is partly air quality, not only heat style.
  • Related items on the same list: #24 measure air quality if you can, and #25 remove potentially toxic materials from the cabin (glues, cheap plastics, treated wood, etc.).
Traditional counterpoint (worth knowing): Classic Finnish practice does put water on the rocks (löyly). Much of the famous longevity epidemiology comes from Finnish sauna culture. Some readers argue #1 and #23 over-extrapolate from “sauna is good” studies that didn’t isolate dry-only vs humid. Bryan’s stack prioritizes contaminant control in modern home/gym heaters; Finnish tradition prioritizes humidity + ventilation. Choose consciously; don’t ignore either airflow or water quality if you do use löyly.

Practical middle path if you insist on steam: clean stones, good ventilation, clean water, and still treat #24–25 seriously.

Acclimate first. If sleep and HRV crash for two weeks (#5), that’s expected adaptation in his notes — not a signal to immediately max the pro protocol.

Clothing, fertility, friends

  • Fabric: no polyester clothing/towels; minimal coverage; 100% cotton.
  • Hat: sauna hat to protect hair/scalp.
  • Male fertility: heat is hard on sperm production; ice the testes (women don’t need this step in his list).
  • Timing: after workouts is ideal; good for muscle recovery.
  • Social: sauna with a friend creates joy (#26) — longevity stack with a human bonus.

Cold plunge after? (his #18)

Bryan’s list says don’t cold plunge after. Many people (and couples on date-night protocols) still do sauna → cold contrast. His stack optimizes for the heat dose and recovery differently than classic Nordic contrast.
