The Big Rocks Concept

Inspired by Gino Wickman’s book “Traction”, the Rocks system is based on a simple but powerful metaphor: If you fill a jar with sand first (small tasks), you won’t have room for the rocks (important priorities). But if you put the rocks in first, the sand will fill in around them.

Mike’s Rocks Implementation Process

1Create a New Rock Entry

Start in the rocks spreadsheet (typically Google Sheets) and create a new row with a unique ROCKS# identifier:

  • Format: [PROJECT]ROCKS[NUMBER]
  • Example: HAMZAROCKS102
  • This ensures each rock has a unique tracking number across all projects

2Create the Rock Document

Navigate to the shared project folder and create a new Google Doc with:

  • The unique ROCKS# identifier
  • Title of the rock
  • Creation date
  • Initial description and objectives

3Document Updates

In the Google Doc, maintain:

  • Progress updates
  • Team input and feedback
  • Links to related resources and files
  • Timeline and milestone tracking

Update the master spreadsheet with:

  • Link to the detailed Google Doc
  • Current status
  • Key dates and deadlines
  • Assigned team members

Why This System Works

  • Centralized tracking of all major initiatives
  • Clear documentation and accountability
  • Easy team collaboration and feedback
  • Consistent naming and organization across projects
  • Focus on important priorities first
